BREAKFAST: THE MEAL (CONTINUED)
(excerpt from May 5, 2007 speech)
There's a new term "deskfast"... I was an office worker once... WeddingChannel.com... for nearly five years. I saw frazzled coworkers hurry into the office and eat a bagle or a "power bar" at their desk. Did they succeed more because they let the pace of their job dictate their lives? No. The only thing they succeeded in was cheating themselves out of a real meal. This leads me to my final point.
Breakfast isn't just a meal, it's an experience. It's symbolic of how you start your day, which in turn determines the mood for the rest of your day. Everyone is hustling, eating in their cars, taking meetings on there cell phones. People hardly have time to smile. Breakfast can be a way to say "hold on. Relax. Sit down and start the day with a nice meal, a little time to read the paper, spend time with your wife and teach your kids to savor the time they have. There's thousands of great healthy sit-down breakfasts you can make in less than 1 minute. It's ridiculous to me that so many people start their day with stress, when they could have breakfast instead.
One of my favorite television shows is "Leave It To Beaver". It was the picture of an ideal America - clean, vibrant and innocent. At its core, it was a show about parents doing their best to raise their kids. Every morning June Cleaver made her family breakfast. At the table, get this... the family would talk to each other. Ward Cleaver would look over his paper and ask The Beaver what he had planned for the day. The Cleavers knew that that breakfast was a chance to ease into a new day and get to know one another.
Now here's another scenario: some guy doesn't even talk to his kids. He gets in his car and goes to work. This story is no good. It's missing a fundamental element... breakfast.
Vote for me and I will give you the idealized America of "Leave It To Beaver"... of course with more minorities is a few of the larger roles.
